Fred Westphal

December 6, 1940 — July 29, 2026

Weston

Fred E. Westphal received the Crown of Life on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. Born in Bonduel, Wisconsin, Fred attended St. Paul Lutheran School, Bonduel High School and later continued his education at Wisconsin State University- Stevens Point.

Following graduation, he worked briefly for the State of Wisconsin and then moved to Marinette, where he was employed at Marinette Marine as their Personnel Manager for eight years. During this time, Fred met his future wife, Karla, who shared his love of the Northwoods. Marinette became their home for 34 years, and they raised four children. When their family was very young, Fred became the Marinette City Clerk, a position which he held for 25 years. Wishing to continue supporting the community, he was honored to serve as Mayor of Marinette for two years.

Outside of work, Fred loved spending time with his family at their cabin in Argonne, Wisconsin. Breakfast often included his famous buckwheat pancakes and a package of Mickey donuts. He was an avid ginseng farmer and enjoyed bringing his beloved Golden Retriever, Princess, with him on trips to the farm. They frequently stopped for individual ice cream cones on the drive home.

In the most recent years, Fred’s family loved gathering around the table for games of “Go Fish” or “Great White” which always ended in laughs. They also loved surprising him with his favorite treats which included pie, chips or a Snickers bar (from the “Snickers machine”).

Fred is survived by his wife of 57 years, Karla Westphal; son, Fred (Julie) Westphal and daughters, Kris Chang, Janet Westphal and Jenni Westphal; five grandchildren, Matthew Westphal, Alyssa Westphal, Jonathon Riley, Noa Riley and Allie Chang; and brother, Marty Westphal. Fred is reunited in heaven with his parents, Irene and Fred Westphal.

A memorial service for Fred will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Peter Ev. Lutheran Church, 1351 Grand Ave. Schofield. Pastor Jeffrey Mahnke will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.

Fred loved serving the Lord through St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schofield. In lieu of flowers, his wish is for memorial gifts to be sent to “His Children Our Mission Fund” which is a school expansion and fundraising campaign by St. Peter Lutheran Church designed to enhance and expand Christian education facilities across their local campuses. Memorials can be directed to St. Peter Lutheran Church Memo: His Children, Our Mission.

Ascend Funeral Home & Cremation Care is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be shared at www.ascendweston.org.
