Rev. Dr. Paul Carl Hunsicker, Sr.

Rev. Dr. Paul Carl Hunsicker, Sr., a dedicated servant of God, passed away on January 2, 2025, at Marshfield Medical Center in Weston, Wisconsin, at the age of 73. Born on September 17, 1951, in Wausau, Wisconsin to the late Carl W. and Lorraine A. (Mertes) Hunsicker, Rev. Dr. Hunsicker was a man of profound faith and commitment, whose ministry spanned over four decades. He married Susan A. Zinter on July 29, 1972, in Springfield, Missouri.

A proud alumnus of Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Concordia Seminaries in St. Louis and Fort Wayne, he was ordained into the ministry in 1984. He earned his Doctorate of Ministry in 1994, reflecting his dedication to theological education and pastoral care. His early career began at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Adrian, Michigan, where he served as Associate Pastor from 1984 to 1987. He then took on the role of Pastor at St. Paul’s and Sion Lutheran Churches in Iron County, Michigan, serving until 1998.

Paul's passion for ministry led him to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Abbotsford, Wisconsin, from 1998 to 2010, which he followed by taking a position at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Colby, Wisconsin, where he served until his retirement in May 2015. He retired from full-time pastoral ministry on November 1, 2010. Throughout his career, Dr. Hunsicker was known for his ability to connect with people, with his sermons translated into multiple languages for use in other countries, thereby extending his impact beyond local boundaries.

A member of Ducks Unlimited, the NRA, and Orphan Grain Train, he was also an avid painter of outdoor landscapes, and cherished his time spent hunting and fishing, activities that brought him great joy and were reflections of his love for the outdoors.

Rev. Dr. Hunsicker is survived by his wife, Susan Hunsicker, of Wausau, Wisconsin; his sons, Paul (Peggy) Hunsicker Jr. of Bonney Lake, Washington, and David (Becky) Hunsicker of Susanville, California; grandchildren, Logan, Harper, Griffen, Isabel, and Freya; as well as his siblings, Mark Hunsicker and Tina Alsteadt, both of Wausau, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Kurt Hunsicker.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Rib Mountain Lutheran Church, located at 227150 Harrier Ave, Wausau, Wisconsin. Rev. Tim Swanson will officiate. Visitation will take place from 9:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau.

Rev. Dr. Hunsicker leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his ministry.
