Ronald E. Otto, affectionately known to his friends and family as Ronnie, was born on September 29, 1934, in Wausau to Edwin and Mertelle (Chaignot) Otto and departed from this world on August 2, 2025. Ron lived a life woven with kindness, love, and a sense of community that will be remembered by all who were privileged to know him.
Ron dedicated a significant part of his life to serving his country in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958. Following his military service, he channeled his strong work ethic into a long career at the telephone company where he worked many different jobs.
He met JoAnn Schnelle in 1958 on New Years Eve at Johnny Fabels. It was his smile that caught her eye and their story together started. They married on October 24, 1959, at Grace United Church of Christ and celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Known for his fantastic smile, Ron was a man whose presence could light up any room. A loving husband to JoAnn Otto, he demonstrated what it meant to nurture a family with unconditional care and support. He was not just a wonderful husband; he was a devoted father to his daughters, Kelly (Andrew) Lee, and twin daughters, Krista (Jeff) Janz, and Coleen (Paul) Hunsanger, embodying the true essence of a caring and attentive parent. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Benjamin (Rachel) Lee, Amanda (Nick) Hoeft, Daniel Hunsanger, Claire Byrne, Corey Janz, Chris Janz, and his cherished great-grandchildren: Calvin and Alexis Hoeft, Eleanor, twins Sullivan and Beckett Lee, and Morgan Byrne, and sister-in-law Jackie Schnelle, nieces and nephews, each carrying a piece of his spirit with them.
Ron's favorite place was the cottage on Skunk Lake (near Willow Flowage). Being up north made him happy. It was his slice of heaven here on Earth. One of his fondest rituals was Friday night fishing at Bosacki's Boathouse, where Old Style stories and laughter flowed just as freely as the fish. We will miss his wit, wisdom, kindness and gentle nature. He had zingers all the way to the end.
Though we celebrate the life of Ron, we remember those who have gone before him, including his parents, father and mother-in-law Louis and Delphine (Steffen) Schnelle, his grandson Andrew (twin of Amanda), great grandson Eli Byrne and his son-in-law Roger Adams. He is also preceded in death by his sister Jean (Albert) Krause, sister Sharon (Vilas) Machmueller, brother Edwin (Madelyne) Otto, and his infant sister Joyce Otto.
Life is about memories....Its stories soothe our souls. Departed from our sight, he remains ever-present in our hearts.
