Sharlen Kathryn Marquardt

June 5, 1946 — December 6, 2024

Manitowoc

Sharlen Kathryn Marquardt, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away on December 6, 2024, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She was born on June 5, 1946, in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

A graduate of Menomonie High School, Class of 1964 Sharlen was married to Robert L. Marquardt in the same year and was blessed with two sons: Keith and Rob. Sharlen devoted much of her life to taking care of those around her. Most notably, she served as the head of housekeeping for nearly 20 years at the Holiday Inn in Rothschild until her retirement in 2013, taking charge right from the beginning of construction with a passion that resonated throughout her career. Her work extended beyond hospitality; she lovingly supervised playground activities while Keith and Rob were in school at Stangel Elementary, where the children affectionately called her “noon goon,” a name she wore with a warm smile. As Keith and Rob grew up, all of their friends would call her "Ma" to which she took great pride, most still refer to her that way.

In 1993, Shar moved to Wausau, where she delighted in watching her grandsons grow up. Family was paramount to her, and she relished every opportunity to spend time with them, especially during their youth when they would bake cookies and cakes together. Her grandsons, Jeff and Cory, were her pride and joy; she never missed a game or event that they participated in. Further, during Robert's racing days, she proudly acted as part of his pit crew, sharing in the joy of car shows in the following years.

A craft enthusiast, Shar enjoyed various activities including plastic canvas, macramé, Artex painting, and especially stamping, through which she made many friends and lasting memories. She took pleasure in making desserts and baking treats that became cherished family traditions, with her Pistachio torte and renowned “Party Mix”—a delightful Chex Mix with Ma's twist—serving as a highlight. Known for her love of Cardinals, her home was adorned with numerous items reflecting her affinity for this beautiful bird, from sweaters to plates and blankets.

Sharlen's unwavering support for her family and friends defined her character. She was the type of person who would do anything for someone else, often putting others' needs before her own. We remember the incredible warmth she brought into our lives, leaving a legacy of generosity and love.

She is survived by her sons, Keith (Kim) Marquardt of Weston, and Rob Marquardt of Manitowoc; and her grandsons, Jeff (Felicia) Marquardt of Rib Mountain, and Cory (Jess Damm) Marquardt of Mosinee. She is preceded in death by her parents, Reba and Ludwig (Slim) Lovelien, and many other cherished relatives, including aunts, uncles, and close cousins, Joan Swisher and Terry Marcus.
